Agios Nikolaos is situated in the Mirabello Gulf on the north-east side of Crete. From the early seventies the town has welcomed thousands of visitors. The lake's history is surrounded by myth. Legend suggests that Athena and Artemis bathed in its waters. Another claims the lake is linked with the volcano of Santorini. "Lotus Eaters" and "Who Pays the Ferryman" are among several films made here. Most beaches surrounding the town are within walking distance and many have received the Blue Flag Award. Several are small sheltered coves and so safe for swimming even when it is windy. There are many interesting shops that the visitor can browse, finding a wide selection of traditional Cretan artwork, copies of pieces from archaeological museums, jewellery, embroidery, local honey and oil. Also on Wednesday there is outdoor market. The archaeological museum is a must, holding a large selection of local finds. During the summer there are often exhibitions, open-air cinema, concerts and galas to attend or just enjoy sitting in the many coffee and snack bars or tavernas serving traditional Cretan 'mezes'. There is a good nightlife with bars and discos, and 'cretan nights' with music and dancing in some tavernas |
